While I may not have recognized it, much of my life has led me to a career in teaching. Many of my volunteer activities involved tutoring and working with students on various school subjects. It was through one of these opportunities that I found my calling to teaching. While volunteering in an English as a Second Language classroom, I realized the impact that I could have on their lives. As the son of a German immigrant, I could empathize with the struggles of many of these students. Using my familiarity with Spanish to aid communication, I assisted these students succeed in their math and science courses. I would leave feeling invigorated and excited for my next visit. For these students I was the only adult willing to spend that extra time to ensure they understood. Many of them had come to the United States for the opportunity for education. I wanted to make sure their dream was realized.
Through this experience and the many others I had at while attending Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, I developed a passion for teaching. Each time I enter a classroom, I look for ways that I can improve the educational opportunities of all students. I approach each student will respect and patience. I believe each (more…)
